Cecilia from Mutchprying, England asks,
Is ‘Sage Mike’ your real name?
Yes, Cecilia, Sage Mike is my real name. I changed it under the legal authority of the Church of Infinitiaty. And, because Infinitiaty is the only religion officially recognized by nine out of ten of the Gods who recognize our universe at all, that’s the only authority that matters.
No other religion is recognized by more than one or, at most, a few dozen of the infinity of Gods. So I don’t care in the least if those religions and, particularly, the Godless masses and authorities don’t accept my name.
Of course, that’s not what you are asking. No, my name wasn’t originally Sage Mike. In fact, ‘Mike’ wasn’t my first name, last name, middle name or nickname. Before I became a Sage of Infinitiaty, I had no personal association with the name ‘Mike.’ That’s a fairly standard practice when it comes to Sage names.
Sage Names Separate Sages from Their Pasts
Sages change their name when they become Sages to show and that they have totally separated themselves from the heathen lives that they might have led in the past. When we do so, it demonstrates that we are now dedicated exclusively to Infinitiaty and our roles as Sages
I am not permitted to tell you what my name used to be. The contract I signed when I became a Sage forbids me speaking or even thinking my prior name. This refusal to state our now non-names further validates that we have thoroughly abandoned our past lives. It also helps us to distance ourselves from any legal encumbrances that we incurred in our former lives.
So, Cecilia, Sage Mike is my real name, but possibly not in the sense you mean. Then again, who the hell cares what someone named Cecilia—if that is your real name—means? Not me.
